Truck driver charged after diesel spillage on Ndola–Kitwe road.

A truck driver has been charged with careless driving after his tipper truck rolled back and collided with a fuel tanker, causing diesel to spill from its three compartments on the Ndola–Kitwe dual carriageway.

A video circulating on social media shows the truck rolling backwards as other motorists maneuvered to avoid it.

Police assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi said in a statement that the accident occurred on Thursday, September 11, near Copperstone University in Luanshya.

He said the accident involved two motor vehicles.

The first was a Sino tipper truck, registration number BCA 9632, driven by John Mashaka Swila, 51, of Lubuto West in Ndola. The truck had a depressed rear section.

The second vehicle was a Sino truck and trailer (tanker), registration numbers ADE 7510 and CAF 3926 ZM, driven by James Mambwe, 45, of Chongwe.

The tanker’s three compartments were ripped open, resulting in a diesel spillage.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident happened when both motor vehicles were traveling in the same direction towards Kitwe. While ascending, the tipper truck rolled back and collided with the tanker, causing diesel to spill from its three compartments,” Mr Chilabi said.

He added that further investigations have been instituted and confirmed that the tipper truck driver has since been charged with careless driving. Saturday, 13th September, 2025).
